I have been asked to do a presentation on ‘how to teach leadership’, which has caused me to reflect on the question, “Can you ‘teach’ leadership?
For over two decades, I have been involved in leadership development and this request has returned me to the old, old debate of whether good leaders are born or made. I can teach leadership theories and models, but I’m not convinced about ‘teaching’ the desired traits of good leaders; such as honesty, integrity and authenticity.
A successful coaching relationship is reliant on the coachee wanting to be coached and being willing to change. I believe the same is true of leaders. They can develop their skills, but they have to want to act ethically and with honesty, integrity and authenticity – don’t they?
Just a thought….
